  • Have a unmolested 120m FHC with leaf springs encased in leather.
It's not a 150, but suspect the shocks. Disconnect one end of shocks and see if car settles to normal ride height per your cars manual. If it does not, bad springs. Duh!
  • Thanks Otto, I purchased my leaf springs from Bill Basset as well.  It looks like they are correct.  After talking with a few people they mentioned that it may take some time for the new springs to settle.  Did you notice anything?  As for the shocks my originals were in perfect shape but decided to upgrade them to Spax Gas shocks through XK's Unlimited.

  •  Hi David, the only two items that control the rear ride height, would be the springs & shocks. Where did you purchase them? I got mine from Bill Bassetts Jaguar & my original rear shocks were still in good shape so I restored them.

I've enclosed a photo of my 150 which appears to have the correct height, front & rear, also a photo of my original rear shocks.

The 150 springs have a different part # from the 140, so a possibility could be the wrong part. Part # C-5721 for the 140 springs, # C-14476 for 150, # C-3186 for the wedge on the center bolt of the spring.

The shocks are the same for both, part # C-16558 for the rear shocks, C-3053 for the upper shock bushings, (4) & C-3273 for the lower shock bush. (4)3421341152?profile=original3421341179?profile=original

  • I have replaced the front and rear suspension on my XK 140 and I'm finding the ride height to be unacceptably high(4+ inches over the tires).  Are there any suggestions on how to lower the rear end?  Front ride height is torsion bar set, so that can be lowered easily enough.

Is 4 inches a normal height from top of the tire to body?  Seems crazy but then again I have grown up with triple adjustable shocks and magnetic ride control.

    Thanks.

  • David,

For what it is worth, S814880, a very early 1956 FHC MC, came with silver painted 54 spoke wheels. It is my understanding in that time, a buyer could have his XK painted in the color of his own choosing. Personally, I think black painted wire wheels with bright knockoffs are strikingly elegant on a black 120 or 140. I believe the chromed wire Daytons may have been an option. There is currently an XK140 FHC MC barn find on FlEa-bay that
has been reawakened after a forty year nap, that has an untouched undercarriage, complete with a cracked original right side exhaust pipe, sporting silver painted wire wheels. The dual exhausts, cylinder head markings and valve covers indicate it has a "C" type head. It has Borg Warner automatic transmission. It is likely an MC.

    Happy Trails!
  • After reading the XK 140 Explored book, I saw a note regarding the 54 spoke wire wheels.  It stated that all XK 140 wire wheels are painted body color for the MC models.  Can anyone confirm this is correct?  Almost every car I see(at least today) has chrome wire wheels.  I'm on the fence about having my brand new Chrome Daton wire wheels Painted Black.

  • Hand Brake Mechanism: having detached the hand brake lever, and the cable adjustment assembly I am left with the 15cm bar attached to the chassis member. What is the method of removing this final part of the hand brake mechanism?

  • Hi Nick

I have a good 3.8 Litre engine I built for my XK 140 but as I have now fitted the original C Type 3.4 Litre I may sell the 3.8.

I built this engine with a Mk2 block but with MK10 straight port head and an E type sump and an XK150S triple carb inlet manifold, it is fitted with 9 to 1pistons and is balanced, but needs a flywheel and a crankshaft damper.

The head is fitted with fast road camshafts.

It had done around 15000 miles in my 140 when I removed it.

    Bill

  • Does anyone have the exact head height dimensions for my XK 120.   I have my motor apart for inspection and see very slight nicks on 3 piston tops indicating possible intake valve contact.  This is assumed to be the result of excessive planing, but I want to get the correct original dimensions.   The removed gasket is .017 thickness, and a slightly thicker gasket .041  should correct the problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

David those two questions that you ask are fully covered in the Jaguar Parts & Maintenance Manual. I have sent you an email with instructions on how to download an electronic copy. (Any Member who wants a copy please contact me).

As I own a XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe I can send you all the pictures you want. Just let me know exactly what you want.

XK120 FHC a few questions and battery box unit install

Fellow forum members, As in the heading, my car is a 1953 120 FHC. I have already installed the Pass side new sill and will install the driver side when I get some advice on these questions I have.I have the pass rear wing off (for good access), the chassis bolted to the frame with the appropriate spacers to ensure the body would not change positions on me - It did not so far. The doors are hung on reconditioned hinges and work just fine. I've also nave the floor panels and trans tunnels…

Float Bowl Setting XK 140 MC with H6 carbs

Hi All,I am currently rebuilding my carbs and had a few questions after reading the XK manual.I states to set the float you push the fork down and use a 1/2inch bar to set the float height.  But almost everywhere else on the internet it says to just rest the fork on the jet(Don't push it down), and set it to 7/16th of an inch.  There is a very large difference between these two setups and hoped one of you could shed some light on it.  Thanks so much

Looking for a car to restore

I am new to the Jaguar community. I am wrapping up restoration of a 1960 Mercedes 190sl and am looking for my next restoration project. I restore and I drive the cars I have restored. When searching for a Jaguar I have found what appears to be a number of bogus sites and sellers. I have had great advice from the Mercedes 190 forum, so I though a Jag forum would be my best source of reliable information both for locating a legitimate car to purchase ans well as to query for advice on restoration…
